Archaeological Sites in Cozumel

Two archaeological sites in Cozumel that are intact and can be visited to remind us of the Maya past: San Gervasio and El Cedral.

Cozumel is the biggest island in Mexico and is located in front of Playa del Carmen in the Riviera Maya, one hour from Cancun.

During World War II, an airbase was built and various ruins were lost forever due to the construction. Also, some others simply vanish under the ever growing jungle. Only 2 archaeological sites are intact and can be visited to remind us of the Maya past: San Gervasio and El Cedral.

San Gervasio: Those are the most visited ruins in Cozumel and are located in the center of the island. It is a sanctuary of Ixchel, the Mayan goddess of fertility. The history said that women were coming as far as from Campeche and Chiapas to honored Ixchel.

The archeological site of San Gervasio is composed of various buildings interconnected between themselves by the famous Sacbe, the Mayan name for road made of white stone and sand.

There are various tours available to visit those ruins. It is a great way to learn more about the Maya civilization and the way they were living.

El Cedral: This particular archaeological site is located in the South part of Cozumel Island. Those are supposed the oldest ruins on the island. Its main attraction is the combination of ruins and a Spanish church. The tours to El Cedral are a great way to discover more about the Mayas and the legacy of their wisdom.
